Through the Gateway

A brief poem about how my life began.

Tiny eyes opened up and beheld the world,
Full of bright and mysterious things not yet explored,
My eyes adjusted as I saw,
Two people looking at me in awe,
Eventually, I left that strange place,
Soon, I was held in my mother’s warm embrace,
Time passed quickly and I started to grow,
My development began to appear noticeably slow,
I clumsily tried to stand up and wander around,
More often than not, I’d find myself on the ground,
Stubbornly, I would get back on my feet,
Only to fall back on to my seat,
When I finally became able to walk,
Other children could already talk,
My speech was nothing like my parents ever heard,
Sara, my older sister, was the only person able to translate a single word,
Frustratingly, I attempted to learn to speak,
With little progress, my parents went elsewhere to seek,
The help needed for my stunted abilities,
They went to a school with special learning facilities,
That’s how I started on my way,
My tiny feet taking my first steps through the gateway.
